Well
I had to have one, even though I am still waiting for tomtom to sort out the
TNC unit like they promised 4 months ago. Anyway this new 720 (520 is UK
Map) has it all and more, voice recognition, MP3 playback, Picture display
and much more than the old 910
If you like me, you want to get things working like you had on your old
model, and I set out to transfer all my points of interest onto the new 720
from my old 710, that took an hour or so, as I have lots. I had also made a
new POI on the 710 (Mt Places) and transferred all my favourites to it, then
the POI could be used on the new 720.
Voices, although all the old voices will work, for street names, and the
voice recognition system, you need a computer voice, and the new 720 comes
with just one, setting this wrong means you can talk as much as you want to
it, but it don't reply. I'm sure there will be plenty of new things soon.
The 720 comes with a built in 2Gb memory card, and if you have your old card
also plugged in you can use maps from it, or store MP3's and pictures on
your external card, while using the internal card for maps etc. Not yet
found a way to use the POI's on the external memory along side the internal.
This beast also has an inbuilt FM transmitter, so you can play the output to
your car stereo, perhaps listen to MP3's and only hear the tom tom when its
giving you a direction (It interrupts the music). Also have a picture show
while it plays music.
I did find a few bugs, but heck the older models add plenty anyway, and we
learned to live with them. When the TNC unit works in the UK I will be 100%
happy, but this new model is very cleaver and a "Must Have"
Oh, and it looks like you can update the maps yourself, and share, but this
is only going to be free for a year ! |
