Beach Safety
Tie inflatable's to the shore - lilos, rubber rings and inflatable boats can
easily drift out to sea. Make sure an adult is around at all times.
Keep clear of cliff edges as they can be slippery when they get wet - cliffs
around the UK are very high and do sometimes give way under foot.
Always swim close to the beach in line with the shore.
Don't eat and drink just before you swim - this may give you cramps while you're
in the water.
Check the weather and tides before you leave home - if the sea's too rough then
you could get swept away.
Look out for warning signs and flags:
Red flag means it's dangerous to swim.
Red and yellow flag means lifeguards are on patrol and you should swim in the
area between flags.
Black and white flag means it's an area used by surfers and is not suitable for
swimming.
Be aware that strong under surface currents can carry you out to sea - calmer
waters between areas of surf usually means dangerous rip currents.
