Ultra Violet
Ask
anyone about Ultra Violet, and they immediately think of sunburn. Tanning,
sunburn and the skin damage that can eventually lead to skin cancer are
caused by the invisible ultraviolet light in sunlight.
Ultraviolet wavelengths is divided into three bands; UVA, UVB and UVC.
The Earth's atmosphere filters out the UVC in sunlight, so sunscreens
don't deal with UVC.
- UVB
The band that causes sunburn.
- UVA
Less energetic than UVB but is more penetrating, although long exposures
to UVA can cause sunburn.
The best rule of thumb is if the sun is still shining brightly through
the clouds that it makes your eyes hurt, or squint, then about 50% of the
UVB is coming through. UVB is by far the worse of the two, leading to the
most skin cancers in humans, eye damage, and numerous other environmental
effects. |
