Amber

Amber is the ancient resin of trees, the resin has gone through a number of changes over millions of years. The worlds two current major deposits of amber are the Dominican Republic and Baltic.

Amber coverYes I did see Jurassic park, and where they extracted the DNA of prehistoric animals from a sample of amber. Amber is the fossilized resin that has seeped from the ancient pine forests growing approximately 40 million years ago.

The resin dripped from the trees filling up holes and trapping seeds, leaves, feathers and insects. The resin then became buried and fossilized.

oxidization and polymerization
Fossilization took millions of years, There is no one tree responsible for the resin that turns into amber by fossilization. The Baltic amber has the oldest and hardest resin. Colours of amber include cognac, lemon and green.

I have found many samples washed up on the beaches of Wales, There are many locations along the UK coast where amber is found, Southwold is one of the most popular locations in East Anglia. Amber is highly sought after and can be made into jewellery.
