Swimming has been practised by many cultures all over the world for thousands
of years. But the swimsuit itself, specifically
for bathing, is new.
It was first
popularised in ancient Greece, due to the rising popularity of public
bathing amongst rich. While nude bathing was acceptable in societies such as
Athens, swimsuits were common amongst men and women.
Going to the seaside for your summer holiday
was always popular years ago, and sometimes it was a working holiday, where
people worked in the farms during the week, and enjoyed the seaside at the
weekend. Sea bathing first became popular for health
reasons in the 1790s: King George III set the fashion for sea bathing when he
visited Weymouth in 1789.
With Victorian improvements in transport, people would go to the seaside
in droves by coach or by train. Towns grew rapidly with the influx of
visitors and there were many forms of entertainment. Works outings to the
beach were also popular. |
